Sketchbook NSFW - Nudity Gwen Gatsbee's sketchbook - chasing greatness June,2012

Hello, everyone! I'm Gwen. I just turned 18 about a week ago. I've always loved art and doodled in my spare time, but it's been a long while since I've devoted much time or effort to it. I saw a thread on here a couple days ago and experienced a sudden bout of inspiration. Though I usually don't post my art online, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to track my progress and get advice from this awesome, helpful community.

Feeling inspired at about five AM, I grabbed the sketchbook I hadn't touched in years and filled the first page with the first thing that came to mind, not really worrying about anatomy:



Next I decided to actually start thinking about anatomy, since my previous attempts at "style" kind of ruined my perception of it. I looked through some books and the first interesting things I saw were feet.



Then I looked online for some models to reference in lieu of actual life drawing. These are really sorry attempts as I was never very good at realism, but I hope to improve with practice!



Taking a quick shift, I decided to try a still life. I drew the first thing I saw: my phone, and then I saw the first assignment on Concept Art 101, which says to draw something from life and then redraw it with something imagined. So I took that challenge:



Finally I did one last figure drawing, on which I spent a bit more time than my initial scribbles (15 minutes):



So that was my first day after seeing this forum! I drew five pages in a sketchbook that had been empty for years, and that makes me pretty happy. I hope to update this frequently and participate here so I can improve and get involved in this great community--hopefully some of it might rub off on me.

Sketchbook NSFW - Sexual Situation Something's off, but what exactly? June,2012

Hey guys. First off, I'd like to thank you all for the great supportive advices. I've learned many things reading other people's trouble and progress. I think I might need some of that right now hehe..

Okay.

I know vectors are not very common around here, but it is the media I like most for what I do. This piece was entirely done in illustrator (including the raster textures which are placed images in corresponding blendmodes and transparencies).

The thing is I can feel there is something off, or lacking, in this piece and I can't point exactly what it is. I just know there is something that will give it the "WOAH!" effect. xD

I think it might have to be with the composition itself (which I'm hopeless if it is). Also, I think the figures don't blend completely with the background. Maybe I'm missing some important aspect on ambience/atmosphere/lightning?

What about the background? I know its very simple, but when I try to give it come complexity I think it steals the attention from the figures. But it does look a bit flat. right?

Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

Sketchbook In Need of a Tattoo Design! June,2012

Hi. I'm going to get a tattoo soon and I have what I want but I need someone to draw it if they could.

This is what I want it to be, but be creative with it plz.
What I am asking for just needs to be in it, but design how u want.

A tree that is half alive and half dead going straight down the middle. Have the alive side have leaves. Show the roots but not the ground. Have the sun and a full moon out on opposite sides of the tree and clouds in the middle.

If you could draw me that and email it to me I would be so much appreciate it.

In Need of a Tattoo Design!

Sketchbook Troll Mage June,2012

Ok, so I'm still struggling to grasp colour and lighting and it's just proving more and more frustrating, I'm really hoping I might be able to get some pointers or advice as to how to better approach this subject matter. The image I'm working on isn't exactly the simplest when it comes to colours and lighting but I've always found diving in the deep end helps me learn faster :P

I started off with this image:



And since reaching that stage I've tried a few approaches to painting it. I've tried doing a value study




But it always feels like I either over or underexpose the lights. I suppose it doesn't help I'm still figuring out which sections I want to draw attention to.

I then just tried working straight with colour:



I was happy with this version but when I tried to add detail to it I feel like I just flushed the colours out with the primary light source being orange.



I'm just not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong, what I'm missing to really make this a colourful and enjoyable image.

If you have any advice or critique it'd be really appreciated.

They have a few reasonably priced art courses. The one I was looking at though was the art history course just so I can improve my knowledge also it boasts a diploma though when I asked about this apparently 'is not an academic qualification and does not carry academic credits'

Is it worth it?

Sketchbook I could use some advice for a difficult mograph project using Trapcode Particular June,2012

Hey guys!

First of all, this is my first post! So hello to everyone
My name is Raynor de Groot, I'm a dutch graphic designer and filmmaker. I'm working on a motion graphic at the moment and I'm kinda stuck.

Here's the problem:


The problem is illustrated with some images that state the problem more clear than I could do in words.

In short:
I want to build up different images (using the same animation) from particles which are emitted from the center and are perfectly aligning. Particles need to be the same size.

Sketchbook Where to begin??? June,2012

Hey guys! I have just decided to go for Graphic Design as a college career. The problem is I really have no idea where to begin in honing my craft. I have photshop and dreamweaver ( I'd like to do some web design ) but I honestly don't know where to begin learning with these programs. If anyone could perhaps give me some links to solid tutorials or just ideas/goals I should be shooting for that'd be sick! Thanks :D

What was your first job, art related or not? I am curious to know, how do artists support themselves before their art is good enough to present and produce professionally? I am 17 and have yet to get a job, but plan on getting one once I return home from break. Also, speaking of age and time, when did you get your first job?

Sketchbook New Judge Dredd movie June,2012

Has anybody seen the Dredd trailer? I am torn as to rather I want to see the movie or not. I am excited for a new judge dredd more faithful to the comics, but I don't like the re-imagined world they created.

Things I like....

It looks like the movie has great atmosphere to it.

The action is cool

Dredd doesn't take his helmet off!

Some gripes so far....

Why are they using vehicles from the 90s? It set hundreds of years in the future.

The buildings shown so far don't scream out mega City, I guess I was hoping for a more "Coruscant" vibe to the city. The whole design is bland looking.

The story presented is eerily similar to the movie The Raid: Redemption (even though Dredd's story should have been locked down long before Raid went into production)

I'm 14 years old, I love jiujitsu and drawing/painting.

Sketchbook What do you see in these compositions? June,2012

"Show, don't tell."

I have a few compositions I've been working on, and I'd like to ask what you see in them, what do they read as? I've worked on them kind of in isolation and I think I've gone blind as to if the values and subject matter work or not.

So, I'm asking crits on readability, composition, values and scale and anything else you can think of. I'm trying to get the initial values and composition right so I can start rendering.

Sketchbook It's been a while...Some new art works. June,2012

It's been 3 years since I visited this forum, during these time I went to a lot of different countries, also made a lot life drawings at each location.
I never use photograph, always make quick and rough sketches and develope a full detailed version at home.

After the trip to Hong Kong, I made a drawing of the busy Queen's Road central, love the busy looking of sign post, billboards, narrow but colourful street. Pen and ink on French paper. Faber&Castell pencil for the very saturate and vivid colours.
